Say That Again?
Marine life is full of beauty, mystery, and as it turns out, names that feel impossible to get right. Some sea creatures have scientific or common names that are almost as memorable as the animals themselves. Here are just five marine animals with names that will leave you scratching your head.
1. Coelacanth
The coelacanth is pronounced “SEE-luh-kanth,” though its spelling definitely doesn't make you think that. This deep-sea fish was once thought to be extinct until it was rediscovered in 1938. It's certainly a rare species, and the name makes it even harder to remember.
2. Geoduck
We know you were expecting "gee-oh-duck," but did you know this creature is actually pronounced “GOO-ee-duck"? This large clam can live for more than a century and is found along the Pacific coast of North America. Its unusual name often causes confusion, but they're really an interesting species!

3. Nudibranch
The nudibranch is pronounced “NOO-dih-brank,” and it refers to a group of colorful sea slugs. These small marine animals are famous for their bright patterns and varied shapes, so it kind of makes sense that they have a name that matches that level of flair!
4. Ctenophore
The ctenophore is one that few rarely get right on the first try. Pronounced “TEE-nuh-for,” with the silent “c” confusing readers, these animals are commonly known as comb jellies, though they are not true jellyfish. Their name can be difficult, but their graceful movement through the water is easy to appreciate.
5. Xiphias Gladius
Xiphias gladius is pronounced “ZIF-ee-us GLAY-dee-us,” and it's the scientific name of the swordfish. Luckily for us, we'll just stick with its commonplace name! The name comes from classical roots and sounds suitably formal for such a distinctive marine animal.
