5 Ways To Prepare Your Home For A Pet

Is Your Home Ready for a New Friend?

Oh boy! You’re about to welcome a new furry friend into your life! Let’s see, you have some toys and a name all picked out, but what else is missing? It doesn’t matter if you’re adopting a senior dog or bringing back a new kitten—house pets deserve a clean, safe space to call home. Let’s explore a few ways to ensure your space is ready for the change.

1. Pet-Proofing

Don’t worry, we’re not talking about child locks on the refrigerator. We are, however, talking about toxic plant removal and basic rearranging. Hide small objects that could be swallowed, keep valuables out of reach, and make sure you don’t have any weak points in your fence.

2. Grab the Necessities

Pet necessities include far more than a collar and some food. Pets need mental stimulation, a proper harness if you plan to walk them, and the right tools for waste management. You can also speak with your local pet store to learn more about which items you actually need!

3. Clean Up the Trash

New pets have a field day with low-lying trash, so do a proper sweep! Anything from crumbs to fallen houseplant leaves can be ingested, which could spell trouble down the road. Make sure your garbage cans have push lids and are tucked away under the sink, too.

4. Have a Vet on Hold

Even if you’ve never had a pet before, it’s important to find your veterinarian. Do some research online and see which locations offer the services you need. Heed online reviews as well! The last thing you want is to bring your furbaby somewhere neither of you is comfortable with.

5. Bundle Electrical Cords

Rambunctious puppies and kittens alike love to chew on wires. Even your more established pets can gnaw your cables out of anxiety or boredom. Bundle them and tuck them away behind your TV console! It’s better to be safe than sorry.
