Stopping Cats From Jumping
As curious and confident creatures, it's only natural that your pet cat becomes interested in whatever it is that you do in the kitchen. But unfortunately for them, a kitchen counter is not the most hygienic place for paws, fur, or unexpected inspections. So no matter how much they want to jump onto that kitchen counter, it's your job to stop them. Here are just five tips to help you do that.
1. Make the Counter Uninteresting
What are pets most interested in? Food! So to get your cat away from the counter, clear it from food, crumbs, and any tempting packaging after each use. Store treats, bread, and produce in sealed containers or cabinets where they can't reach them. When there's nothing rewarding to find, your cat has less reason to jump up.
2. Provide a Better Spot Nearby
Try to shift your cat's attention to someplace else. Set up an approved perch close to the kitchen, such as a cat tree, sturdy stool with a mat, or window seat, and place it where your cat can comfortably see you while you cook. To reinforce the good behavior, reward your cat for choosing that spot with praise or a small treat.
3. Use Consistent, Calm Redirection
When your cat jumps up, don't freak out. You don't want to scare them! Instead, gently place them back on the floor or guide them to the approved perch. Avoid yelling or sudden reactions, especially because excitement can accidentally reinforce the behavior.
4. Control the Timing of Meals and Play
If you think hunger is the main reason behind your cat's obsession with the counter, feed your cat on a predictable schedule so they are less likely to seek food there. A cat who is satisfied and tired is generally easier to redirect.
5. Add a Safe, Unpleasant Surface
If you've exhausted most of the above ideas, it's time to get serious. Consider using a temporary, cat-safe deterrent surface on the counter when not in use, such as double-sided tape or an approved motion-activated air device. Doing this consistently for a period of time will teach your cat that the counter is not a comfortable choice.
